Everyone loves summer vacation, but traveling can pose serious challenges to the fit lifestyle you’re trying to embody. We navigated airport munchies in part one, but what about when you get to your destination? Maybe food isn’t as much of an issue for you, but working out when you’re on vacation? How? Where? When? Sure, you’re on vacation, but who wants to come back from 10 days out of town without having hit the gym? Not me.
PROBLEM: WORKING OUT ON VACATION IS HARD
Getting in a workout when you’re at home? Sure. No problem. You’ve worked it into your schedule. But now you’re in a strange land with new people or old friends—where does the work out fit in?
SOLUTION 1: PLAN FOR IT
You fit working out into your busy home schedule, you can work it into your vacation schedule. Schedule it like any other important part of your trip. It’s not an all-day thing and when you get home and you can still fit into your pants and make it through your boot camp class without going weak in the knees, you’ll be glad that you found the time.
SOLUTION 2: HIRE SOMEONE
Seriously. Many hotels will be happy to arrange a session with a personal trainer for you. If you invest a little cash you’ll be less likely to cancel or flake on your workout. Who knows, you might even learn a new exercise or technique to take home with you. If your hotel isn’t that fancy, get online. There are companies (like Fit for business) geared toward fitness for the business traveler. They’ll point you in the right direction.
PROBLEM: THE HOTEL “GYM” SUCKS
Not all hotels can boast a gym, and some of the ones that do have a pretty loose definition. It’s disappointing to roll up to the hotel, change for a workout and discover that the “modern exercise facility” you’ve been counting on is actually a 12-year old elliptical in a broom closet.
SOLUTION 1: KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
If you have some say in where you stay, call ahead and find out for sure whether they have a gym that is up to your standards. If they don’t, find a hotel that does.
SOLUTION 2: WHO NEEDS A GYM?

SOLUTION 3: WHEN IN ROME…
Every city has someplace to work out. Hop onto your smart phone and find out what sports centers, gyms and fitness groups are in the area. Ask if they have a visitor pass plan you can use while you’re there.
SOLUTION 4: SWIM
If the hotel has a pool, there is always swimming. Even if it’s a small pool you can still tread water and burn a few calories that way!
The bottom line is, where there’s a will there is always a way. Working out while you’re out of town is not impossible. It just takes a little planning and intention. Find a way to work it in, you’ll be glad you did!
